Project History
In the summer of 2012 we started
the Love is Love project. During the first stage of the project we
photographed 28 Vibrant LGBT families from all over Alaska. Thru out the
project filmmaker April Frame recorded video, interviewed couples, and
compiled a video that is sure to leave you misty eyed. Check out a
preview of the film below. (WARNING: Tissues Required)
During our gallery opening on October 5th 2012, over 760
Alaskan’s came to show their support for the project, and the beautiful
couples. Shortly after the show in 2013 Senator Lisa Murkowski announced
her support for the repeal of the Defence of Marriage Act (DOMA) and
sent us this note about the project.

Media Coverage Advocate: Although
Alaska is unlike anywhere else in the country, love there looks like it
does just about any place. But what photographers Mitch Kitter and
Shalem Mathew really set out to prove with the launch of the "Love Is
Love" project in the summer of 2012 is even simpler — that love is love,
no matter if you are straight or LGBT. Alaska Dispatch: Photographers
and studio owners Shalem Mathew and Mitch Kitter, partners themselves,
decided they would document same-sex couples to help people understand
that love is the same for everyone. They put out a call on Facebook for
same-sex couples who wanted their portraits taken, and the response was
tremendous. Daily News: What
started as a localized exertion by “Like is Appreciate: Alaska,” the
challenge will extend via several states that have not still legalized
marriage equality, this kind of as Utah and Texas, in an work to
showcase the appreciate of LGBT partners in these spots via a photo
book. Freedom to Marry: More
than two years ago, a young woman was having head shots taken at
Treft.Punkt, a photography studio in Anchorage, Alaska. During her
shoot, she asked the photographer, Shalem Mathew, about his wedding
engagement shoots. "Do you photograph all kinds of people?" She asked. Huffington Post: "Love
Is Love" is a large-scale photography project from Mitch Kitter and
Shalem Mathew that seeks to document the love and commitment of lesbian,
gay, bisexual and transgender couples and their families across
America. Kenneth Walsh: Help
Mitch Kitter and Shalem Mathew bring "more love to more people" as they
create a fine-art photo book featuring real LGBT couples and families
from across America. Media Bistro: Photographers
Mitch Kitter and Shalem Mathew hope to raise $25,000 on Kickstarter.
They hope to use the funds to create an art photo book for the “Love is
Love” project. Out Traveler: Mitch
Kitter and Shalem Mathew have tapped into the power of beautiful images
with their series of couples portraits in Alaska. Help them hit the
other 49 states. Reddit: There is a great discussion going on over at Reddit, check it out! The Rewards:
