The percentage of LGBT characters on TV dropped overall in 2013, but nevertheless it was quite a year for homosexy women on the box

5. Scott and Bailey
2013 was the year we fell head over heels for
Nicola Walker. You might remember her brilliant performance as
Helen Bartlett, and we've been having withdrawal symptoms since the
end of season three. If you loved the ITV drama as much as we did,
you'll be pleased to hear Suranne Jones and Lesley Sharp will be
reprising their crime-fighting roles for another season. Look out
for it in the new year.
4. Heading Out
We loved this Sue Perkins-penned high-energy sitcom, which boasted an impressive support cast including Nicola Walker, Dawn French and Lip Service's Anna Skellern. Full of charm and brilliant comedy, it helped solidify Sue's place as a national treasure.
3. Last Tango in Halifax
DIVA editor Jane Czyzselska described the BBC One romantic drama as "lesbian catnip", and she wasn't wrong. Written by Sally Wainwright, the show manages to explore a lesbian relationship without the usual sensationalism we've grown so tired of. The relationship between Caroline (Sarah Lancashire) and Kate (Nina Sosanya) is beautifully written; sensitive, believable and warm. Sosanya told DIVA: "It's important to me to be part of a culture of television that represents people responsibly."
2. Wentworth
Fans of the original were worried that the reimagining of the Prisoner: Cell Block H would be a disaster, but Lara Radulovich and David Hannam created a brilliant contemporary version of the classic, and now we can't imagine a world without our new favourite pin up, Nicole da Silva (pictured).
1. Orange is The New Black
Netflix's most watched show of the year had us all hooked from the minute we heard Regina Spektor had written the song for the opening credits. We could go on all day about why we loved it, and it's impossible to pick our best bits so we'll just say this: Alex Vause. Hurry up, season two.
